View Full Version : Tract home HVAC design fixes
I'm currently in search of a professional in my area.
So far I'm getting mostly professionals over the phone saying that duct design is at fault etc etc.
I agree with them, but it seems there is no fix unless I just want to rip apart the house? Only option given so far is a mini-split for one room. I'm intrigued by the idea, but are there other options?
I'm not looking for what the best option is, but what options are there to fix tract a home where duct design is craptasic?
So far I haven't found the professional that makes me warm and fuzzy about identifying the specific problem and coming up with a specific fix, but wanted to know if it was because of their lack of trying, or because of the lack of available fixes.
Thanks
Jabq

Not enough information for anyone to help you.
Where do you live?
What are the issues you are trying to address?
Sorry, I previously posted on the issue and didn't include any background on this.
2600 sq ft 2 story home with a 5ton rheem AC/Furnace, upstairs only gets down (or up) in temp when desired if you leave the system on for long run times which requires manual manipulation to make happen. The return is 16" flex duct into a 20x20x20 return plenum/ and 20x20 grill in the ceiling on the second floor attic right above the stair case.
In the summer, upstairs is hotter, but the master bedroom the worst of the upstairs room. Sometimes as much as 10F from the other rooms.
I'm in central New Mexico, so moderate climate (with exception of tonight, which is dropping past -4F right now).

Jabq, there is a consumer on this site by the name of Gary who lives in your area and has probably researched just about any contractor in your area. Might be a good idea to consult him as his quest for a quality contractor has been very difficult as well.
Unfortunately, in my area, and especially areas where you are(close to the border), the talent pool is thin and the consumer suffers.
Just do a search for Gary and Albuquerque.
Gary and I have been talking, and ive got some family that works with builders looking for someone but no go yet.
I am losing confidence that ill ever find comfort in this or any home ever. Right now my master bedroom is 64 after running the heater almost constantly for an hour.

Yeah, none of the HVAC contractors I have talked to have given me a lot of confidence in them, but I've really only to a few. The one I had installing my system has been "uninvited" to come back and finish the job.
At 11:30PM it's 2F on my back porch and -3F on the roof.

Lack of return air. You don't run 16 " flex to a five ton. Lack of grill surface area for a five ton.

And I could be too.
A SEA-ABQ round trip was about $300 last time I checked.

Well, I go every Oct/Nov and April for the NHRA drags. If I don't go then my dad doesn't have a drinking buddy while he's there :).
And, nope, not going to Pahrump. This brotha doesn't need to pay for that..ha ha.
