Is it possible to recover a significant amount of oil during the recovery of a system?

Yes, it absolutely is. Refrigeration oil becomes "solvent" and mixes very well with most, if not all refrigerants. This is the whole reason behind a crankcase heater on the compressor.

You will typically see the most oil in the refrigerant recovery process when pulling straight off the liquid side......

Thank you. I was always told that no significant amount would be recovered, when recovering a system. Just recovered a system, made repair, and charged with fresh refrigerant. Pretty sure I lost most of the oil, didn't see much in the sight glass upon start-up. Thought it might be somewhere else in the system, but I think it is sitting in my recovery tank.

So now I need to recover again, and put appropriate amount in the system?

Totally depends on how the system was running before you recovered the refrigerant charge.

If the charge was somewhat low and you recovered to repair a leak, the low velocities can hang up oil in areas other than the compressor...

If you have a sight glass for the oil, you can simply "top off" the oil charge...Can't go much further than that until you get the post count up and get a pro membership...

Good luck.:CU:
