Been having this problem since the end of last winter... Our heat pump will run 45-50 minutes with temps 12 degrees above room temp with temp 35-40 outside then the temp will go to room temp exactly coming out the of the vent. We had two different techs come out and at the time the heat pump was working correctly and not showing the problem. They each checked the charge, etc. and everything was fine and even after explaining they couldn't figure it out. They said they can't fix it unless the problem shows itself while they're present. They also tested the defrost with the jumper to the two pins and it started the defrost, but when I checked it when the unit blows out room temp air itll stop the compressor and do nothing. So itll start the defrost if you put a jumper on the pins when the heat pump is putting out 12+ room temp air, but when the unit puts out room temp air it will not go into defrost. Is it locked out or something, since he said what I said isn't possible unless the unit would be froze up. The temp with go from +12 to nothing instantly, not slowly at all so....
After the tech left the unit started working for around 2.5 hours before blowing out room temp air (without aux on). It'll do this for hours (hp outside running well the fan is moving on the outside hp so I assume it is running) blowing room temp air and every once in a while itll start putting out heat again then do it for a while longer. Then today its back to 45 min working then room temp air. Only way to get it to work is turn it off now for 45 minutes and then on again and it works. We've had to leave it on emergency below 30F unless itll run all night doing just about nothing and the aux will heat the house anyway. I was thinking something with the defrost board, but I'm no hvac tech.
I'm tried of paying people to do nothing so any ideas?
I'm in the Martinsburg, WV area if anyone know any good techs in the area...
