Opinions needed for Consumers Digest

Hey everybody --

My latest 'gig' is to write the Consumers Digest 2011 Spring issue article on room and central air conditioners. I have been gathering info from manufacturers and the bulk of the article will deal with any new trends in air conditioning that have a direct impact on consumers. I will also have recommended 'best buys' based on my research. I value the knowledge of HVAC contractors and techs here at HVAC-Talk and would like any feedback you might have time to give.

Rather than start a stream of replies, I would appreciate that if you are interested in helping me out by discussing some of the best -- and worst -- of the a/c units you install, could you please e-mail me and I'll send you a few questions?

Most guys here will tell you that it isn't so much the brand of the unit that is important, it's the installation. So much rides on the successful mating of a unit to a home or business based on things like load calculations, capacity, and ductwork, along with skill and professional expertise.

The brands offer different features and benefits, and have several different price points, but the least of them can be installed to run acceptably, and the best can be installed to run very poorly.

I thought I would let you know that the article I wrote on room and central air conditioners for Consumers Digest has been published in its May/June 2011 issue. The magazine does not publish the article online so you would have to pick up a copy at the bookstore. To say the least, it was an interesting experience – a bit tumultuous at times. I argued with the editors about the ridiculous idea of publishing retail prices for uninstalled central air conditioning outdoor condensing units for split systems. This is not the way units are sold by HVAC contractors. But alas, they had the final word. And to have price comparisons and editorial content about room and central air conditioners – two entirely different entities – in one article was quite “interesting’ too.
