i'm working on a trane compressor m# CRHR600C-7RA0
s# J08031266AR which was installed about 6-months ago. it is making a unusual noise (sound like metal on metal) the compressor has a one-year warranty from the rebuild company. i want to try to get it replaced while it is still under warranty. my problem is that the compressor is still working properly. i fell like it is going to go out eventually. Has any one ever heard on getting a vibration analysis done on a semi-hermetic compressor. i fell that if i had a vibration report, i would have grounds to get the compressor replaced under warranty.

vibration analysis on a recip would be pretty ify. generally when those comp tear up the oil gets pretty grey quick. Can you still hit full load amps. Is superheat O.K., possible broken rod or slapping discharge valve. when loaded completly check area directly over piston for temp. check to see if all pistons are pumping, should be equally hot

I would first do the stethescope thing with a screwdriver at several points around the compressor. Take an oil sample and send it out for analysis of moisture, acid and wear metals. If you still feel it`s going to fail call the vibration guy.

Are you familiar with Trane "R" and "E" compressors?
A 60 ton "R" is a noisey beast compared to a Carrier.
Perhaps it is just being a Trane.
The rebuilders may be willing to have someone look at it if you don't feel qualified to judge.

no it is not the normal sound of a CRHR600 compressor
the other CRHR600 two feet from it is half as loud
