View Full Version : liquid filter drier -wrong direction?

Worked on replacing a compressor on a package Lennox Heat Pump, and put a new liquid filter drier also. Put the unit back in service and everyting works okay, but then found out later we installed the liquid drier backward. Opps! We goofed up. We intend to go back this weekend when the building is unoccupied and correct it. My question is - what is the immediate consequence(s) having a drier installed backward? Thanks for your advice.:det:

Restricted refrigerant flow.

dude if you installed a drier backwards on a heatpump you installed the wrong drier
dude if you installed a drier backwards on a heatpump you installed the wrong drier

there are bi-directional driers made specifically for heat pumps.

My thoughts exactly!
I allways look for the two arrows for heat pump driers before installing. like what was mentioned, restriction of reff. as far as I know. I might be wrong.

Heatpump system does not absolutely require bi-flow drier. remember those check valve guys.
Pull the freon and change the drier before it burst.

Yep, Trane uses a 1 way drier in their heatpumps.

okay?
I will be the dumb guy here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yhe drier is in the liquid line right before the evap???
when in hp mode the liquid is flowing back to the outside unit??
why do you NOT need a bidirectional drier???????????????
okay?

because sometimes as mentioned there are regular driers with check valves. Flow is through 1 drier for heating and 1 for cooling

Supert, if it's in the liquid line, it still see's a reverse in refrigerant flow, from a/c it goes out the liqhid line to evap and back the suc. and in heat it goes out the suc, which is hot vapor line and back the liquid line.
Most of the ones installed inside a h/p itself are installed just before the TEV, and only filters in heat. Some of the Newer High Eff. units have 2 1 way driers, 1 b-4 TEV or EEV and 1 After the Check so it filters in both directions.

do not worry its just re cleaning it self but change it for hp best advise only use bi flow driers

The hardest part about a mistake is admitting you made it.
The best part is being smart enough to know you made the mistake.

:ditto: Had to service a XB10. Go to local Trane supplier and parts guy hands me a 083 or something like that. I says to the man it won't fit with out repiping he says thats what part comes up. :gah:

I remember the old "over and under" Lennox Heat Pumps used small one way driers with check valves...
