When you say trouble, do you mean that they need help with electrical troubleshooting or with actually reading the diagram symbols and tracing the circuit?

or specifically with ladder diagrams ???????

If they will be working on small Package or split systems you could copy or scan some of the IOM's that have the diagrahms. You could also take photos of control compartments and pictorial and ladder schematics. Sounds as if someone needs to have inhouse training with their guys. Also have them look for a copy of Modern Refrigeration. Usually at most supply houses.

Its the electrical troubleshooting that they need help with. They know the book work of it. But when they open up a cover and they have to trace the circut through all the controls is were they get lost. Trying to help them now before a/c season.

someone with good knowledge should be able to teach them to navigate schematics rather quickly, IF they understand the symbols, and how the devices operate. for example, normally open/closed and how they are represented. the thing with schematics is, once someone shows you how they work, a light bulb goes off and makes it easy. you just need that one guy.....shouldnt take more than a half hour if they truly know the book stuff.

I think one of the problems young guys have today is that the wiring diagrams on residential and commerial are too detailed. These guys are conceptulist, elementary
(ladder) diagrams work. They always worked better for me and I am an old guy.

I never had that problem, its the other way around, not enough details, worst with ANSI schematics and thats going to be the norm, ladders or pictorials are things of the past. :(

Apply for pro membership. I have two articles that will help your guys in the educational forums.

One is a review paper called, "so you want to understand electricity?" And the other is a follow up on troubleshooting in the residential troubleshooting section of the same educational forum. When I get home, I will post some links for those with Pro Member access.

I just googled "basic schematic reading" and came up with many sites, all free and from very basic knowledge to more advanced topics. Those HVAC-TALK educational forums may be more in the direction you are looking for though...

PS... A very basic link with only a few pages shows basic symbols, etc. at http://highfields-arc.6te.net/constructors/info/readschems.htm

Ooops...European conventions, both types are in a symbols table at http://www.scribd.com/doc/13569913/Electrical-Schematic-Symbols

I see a lot of bg equipment schematics, and to be honest, i dont think they have enough details. Things like setpoints have gone the way of knob and tube. i wuld like to see manufacturers offer starting setpoints on the drawings, or any other pertinent information. showing me a high static safety is great, showing me anticipated trip point would be better. showing me freeze protection is awesome, but how about at what point should it open? with the advent of microprocessors, those points are not always where you might think they would be, and sometimes the only way to find out is trial and error. I can name the top tech guys at several manufacturers of custom equipment, and have the home phone numbers of a few, but anyone else doesnt know this crap anymore. Yes, i have called a few of them at home on occasion on a saturday night. one in particular wont answer his phone on saturday afternoon until his kid is done playing basketball. sometimes you just have to wait......

good point!

set points and limits are not always like you would think!

for example, while not adjustable! The superheat on a carrier scroll is set at 7.6 degrees!

If given the opportunity I may have set it at 25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe that if someone is really interested in learning something he/she would buy the books, pay for the training of do some research here instead of sending a messenger, nowadays most newcomers think thats somebody else responsibility to provide their tools and training.

I had an old timer a long time ago tell me this, "there are only Four things in a circuit, The Conductor, The Switch, The Resistance, and The Storage." He repeatedly had me ID circuits in one of these catagories til I got it. I still think on these terms whether working on a board or 460 volt circuits.

Another thing I do is scan wiring diagrams, sometimes I have to scan them several times till theY are square. Paste them into paint, get rid of the Generic stuff that's not in that unit. Then I colorize the diagram. I store the finished drawing as a Tif so the colors don't bleed. There is CAD Software that you can do a diagram on and you can "energize" the drawing.
Also tell them Wiring diagrams are normally drawn with Power off.
