Hi,

I had a new furnace installed two weeks ago (a two stage RUUD, single speed motor) and noticed a very very slight gas smell coming from the furnace. I called the gas company to check it out and they detected a very very small leak coming from a small black piece on the top of the gas valve in the furnace.

I called the installer who came back and tightened the pipe connection that goes into the gas valve box - which is not where the sensor had picked up the leak. He claims that the two pipes going into either side of the box are the only places that could have gas leaking from.

I'm totally ignorant about how furnaces work - does that make sense to you guys? I think I still smell the gas, but since it's so slight I may be imagining it and the installer says it's all in my head, he says the connections are tight so there can't be a leak coming from anywhere else. Is that true?

I'm going to call the gas company back to check, but if they do still detect the gas, I would like to sound a little more knowledgeable and have something to say to the installer. Can anyone tell me if there are other possibile causes for a gas leak coming from the top part of the gas valve? Is it true that gas can only leak from the two pipes going in, or can there be something wrong with the gas valve itself that would cause a leak?

Thanks for your help!

i would have the gas company come back out just to be on the safe side . a gas leak is nothing to play around about. he should have used a leak detector or a soap bubbles that are made for just this kind of situation because alot of times even if all the threads are covered with a thread compound (pipe dope) and they are tightened down they still may have a leak. so just have the gas company look and they will be able to tell you if there is a leak and if so make him fix it right.
