A couple of days ago there was some kind off a pump noise just above the kids room that has the HVAC in the attic. THe sound seem to be a cyclical pump sound coming on and off.

Not sure if it is normal but have not heard it before. IT seem to be running until the thermostat kicks in.

I even climbed into the attic and the only thing additional I could hear was an additional was a sound of a low level of water and air that bubbles when the pump works (the pump sounds like its on for a few seconds and off for a few)

This went of for a while before we decided to shut the HVAC and restart it and that seem to have gone. But it happened again last night.

I am ignorant on the function of the HVAC (other than it is blowing hot air in winter and controlled by my thermostat)

Is this normal or is something wrong? I am surprized that we have not noticed it before but could be that we were not in our kid's bedroom at night. Is there a solution to fix this?

There is no way anyone of us on this forum would know exactly what that noise is. Best bet is to call a pro to check it out. Maybe you can avoid a bigger situation in the future..

Is the system a gas furnace?

It is most likely a pump and you need a service call ASAP. Don't you (or anyone reading) mess with the drain system of your HVAC equipment especially when installed over a finished ceiling.
