This is complex and you are probably not ready for this but??
My home is too dry! How big of a humidifier do I need? You do not need a humidifier, stop the air leaks. Common comments posted here.
The basics are that air from the occupants humidifies the varible infiltration of dry outside air. Occupants putout about .5 Lb moisture per hour from presspiration/resspiration/activities. With occupants in the home humidifying and infiltrating dry air mixing with the moisture as it leaves the home, a humidity level is established. Using the .5 lb moisture per occupant as a base times the number occupants, the infiltrating air moisture content verses the exfiltrating air moisture content allows an estimate of the volume of the air infiltrating the home.
Simple to estimate the amount of humidification(lbs. of moisture per hour) needed to reach the desire %RH in the home.
Also the effect of air tightening can be estimated. Also in cases of excess inside moisture, the effect of increasing fresh air can be estimated. This not often the problem.
All the same facts apply to summer excess moisture problems also. We have next spring more about that.
I believe that this a more intelligent method of calculating the amount of humidification campared to adding the biggest humidifier made.
Check out the pdf and give me some feed back.

Are you asking what size humidifier to have installed in your home?

I am suggesting that we can come up with chart that will help size a humidifier. The idea is that by looking at the specific info on a home, we can increase or decrease the %RH by adding more or less fresh air, adding or removing a specific lbs. of moisture per hour, and see the effect of outside dew points as they increase or decrease on comfort and health in the home.
Everyone is very confused by the issues that control indoor comfort winter and summer. Also most most confused by the varible of amount of fresh air depending on wind and outdoor temps effect on the home. There is a minimal amount fresh air that homes need to be healthy as well as comfortable.
We can make there issues more understandable for the average tech and user. Were able to veiw the chart?
