just a quick qestion ... I was changing the HSI on a rheem furnace.. and after i did that i turned on the pwer and then the HSI poped and shattered and I think it burned the board... now i think what happened was either the HSI was touching the furnaced body and shorted out and thats y it poped or something else was wrong..or the 120 jumped from the hsi to the furnace cuz it was too close(if thats even posible) ... now what i wanna know is if you give the furnace BODY 120v would it burn the board cuz the board is grounded to the furnace right? ....ill give u step by step what happened
1. i changed the hsi
2. turn on power
3. hsi i smarks and blows
4. give power to furnace again
5. nothing happens
6. check 24v fuse(blown)
7. jumpered fuse cuz i didnt have one like it(stupid thing to do .. never again)
8. board turns on and smeels bad and smokes..
....now i just dont wanna change the board again and have the same problem ... any thoughts?
to me it seems like the 24v fuse blew but sense thr is no fuse on the 120 side it muct have burnt when the hsi touched the furnaces body...
help please

I always keep packs of fuses but for testing I use a resettable breaker. connects in the circuit and saves money on fuses. when the problem is fixed stick a fuse in and Bobs your uncle

Why didn't I think of that?

Do it enough and you'll blow the transformer. I personally find that using my meter saves on fuses as well.

Keep in mind to use a fast blow circuit breaker, a slow blow won't blow soon enough and can blow the t-former.

This is a breaker designed for the application. you can buy them at supply houses. they have the pigtails with terminals on them to tie right in to the transformer. I use it to keep from popping fuses but I do try to fix the problem and not trip the breaker.
