I have a ~1980 Trane Torrivent air handler and just replaced the motor. How do I find out what the correct rotation direction is?

it has a standard blower wheel right?

Well...the fan motor should be turning in a direction which allows the blower wheel to discharge the air through the discharge of the blower housing. Depending on the blower wheel style you can tell by the direction of the blades. As far as being able to tell whether or not you have that there are a bunch of ways to do that. The safest is probably using a magnetic rotation indicator.

I can wire the motor to turn clockwise or counterclockwise. However, I can't see anything on the fan unit or the manual to indicate which direction the rotation should be and I don't really want to disassemble the fan unit to take a look inside. Any other suggestions?

call a pro
:Faint:
Check amp draw / static pressure with motor in both directions. Blower should draw higher current and create higher static when operating in correct rotation.

Yeah...but really needs to be done with AHU closed to get accurate readings...that could be a big mess depending on the working space one has.

I agree with nyrb on this , also if leads are marked you should be able to connect
1 to "a" phase 2 to "b" and 3 to "c" phase if this motor was built in U.S.A.
I had one of these units and it was a pain, bearings to small for wheel size.
if you can stop the fan with your tongue its going the wrong way
yup, that's how I do it. ROFL

If it's forward incline like a typical squirrel cage then it rotates that same direction,
If it's backward incline or "non overloading" it's the other way around.
If it's radial vanes (straight), then you have to look at the shape of the housing.
Even with your best phase rotation meter and wired 123, it might still go the wrong way.
That's just the way it is, and why they always say bump it to see which direction it turns.

HAHAHA
Should have schematic and arrows on motor shouldnt they?
Wire this way for ->, and wire this way for <-.
If worse come to worse, stick your tongue in it. Trust me, we all did it one time or another.
It only hurts if you wired it right, but the satisfaction of the job well done stops the bleeding alot quicker.

hears a good way- if you feel air coming out of the register a a good rate chances aRE its going the right direction. If you have to ask this question you have a long way to go. Where did you get the motor?

YO tommy1010 Bump and run!!!!!!
That does it, now you are using pick pocket techniques along with the interesting test methods. And you wonder why NoJersey and the 5 boros has a rep?
I guess this is a family site and unlike the poor naval Captain who got slammed for political correctness by a bunch of civilians means you can't suggest using other body parts to test airflow
