Hello everyone,

My first post to HVAC-Talk. I have a question regarding placement of my HVAC registers in the home I am building. Does anyone know of a way to navigate around a floor joist when installing a stack boot for a register? I did not know what restrictions there were with joists (aside from the obvious weight and placement of the joist). Was not sure if there were any types of adaptors using flex duct hose. Issue is I am building a house and paid $3k for an optional bay window. The builders HVAC contractor installed the vent very far off center of the bay window in the formal living room and is now an eye sore. I am not sure that the joists were the reason for the displacement but would only assume so. I was hoping there may be a way to route out the top of the joist a bit, without jeopardizing it integrity, and slip an angled stack-boot just over the joist or even, if available straddle the joist, to put the register in the center of the bay window.

Do not cut into your joist.
If you won't hire someone to do it to code, at least talk to your building inspector, and he might show you what size/location of cut can be made in your particular situation.
Is this dimensional lumber, or a truss type joist?

if the joist is in the center of the window the boot can't be.

Thanks all for the quick replies...

2old2rock,

Understand about the joist. I have TJI joists (however at the bay window I would not think they extend out past the foundation). As I mentioned, this is new construction and I am sure the ducts and registers are to code, my only issue is the placement of two; one as mentioned above and one that would be located directly under the bed in the master bed room. Not provided walk-throughs by the builder to discuss possible options, I only just found out where the registers are located. During pre-construction meetings, he was adamant about not putting registers in the walls as I had in the home I previously had built in NJ (Is there a code in MD that restricts placement of registers in walls?) So now I have these two issues. Again, my question is if there are any adaptors/boots that I could use to facilitate the relocation of the register.

More labor intensive to install in the walls. Also more money for duct materials.

Thanks for the reply Skibme,

That information sure helps. At least I have an option to extend the HVAC duct to the wall and properly placed.
