Return Air

This is a question regarding no return air duct existing in my older home. I was just informed that my exisiting gas furnace is supposed to have a return air duct which is apparently missing, no surprise really, nothing about this house seems to be done correctly. However, I am considering replacing the furnace and was wondering if it is a big deal to not add one? Please clarify the benefits of a return air duct for me [not hvac saavy].
