When to look at a payne 95% furnace. It was leaking and I checked it out. It was cracked at the draft inducer housing. What would cause the crack?

Lots of things. Your service tech should find out why and resolve the issue after replacement, or it will need to be replaced again.

Extreme changes in temp...if the unit is exposed to extremely cold temps like in an attic it is possible that it could crack due to the constant heating up and cooling off.
Depending on age...it simply could have been damaged during install.
Previous tech overtightening housing screws
Installing company employees moving the flue piping (for whatever reason) to a point it broke the housing...assuming it is a 90plus.
bottom line...get it replaced before using and check operation and all your temps to ensure proper operation.
