How do I know if it is calling for w y g etc.? Iv'e read the cover and the test. Jumping out did not work well in the past.

if it calls for w you get heat, y cool, g fan. jump the test pins and it tests, runs through each stage. if it does none of the above you have no call. and you need to call someone who knows what they are doing.

if it's on the 1,2,3,4 side of the board it's DC. if you are just trying to run it on as a 24 v system you are out in left field playing with your balls

If it is the stat with the numbers (1,2,3,etc) instead of Y,H,G then it dictates mode by resistance. It cannot be jumped out at the stat if that type.
