I have a contractor saying that the Trane XL16i heatpump has a line dryer built in and that an external line dryer is not needed. Is a line dryer really built in? Is an external line dryer really not needed?

heatpump has two of them inside the cabinet

Correct, the XL16i has a line dryer inside the unit, no need to use an outside dryer.
