:deadhorse:I've been an HVAC-R Tech for 15 years and enjoy a challenge> There's nothing like a good trouble shoot< but some TXVs OR EXVs when mounted on a brass distributer can be a real kicker. I'll re-build a valve quick but we all know that's not always an option.I'd rather perform two compressor change outs than change a 20 ton valve. I'm looking for a better technique silver soilder is the way I do It now some techs I know use soft soilder due to it being on the low side. I haven't burned up any valves but think to much cooling of valve and header could be my problem

Oxygen/acetylene is what i use with a flux coated silver solder. It's expensive per stick but has higher silver content and flows great. It will work to join steel to copper and it has worked well for me in some other hairy situations.

Use utectic rods like flashgas said when joining copper to brass or ect other then that i make sure it real clean have used contact cleaner to clean old copper before works pretty good.

If brand new, then I use soft solder. Unless it is heat-pump.
If old, then I use cutting tip with lazy flame (one step below the hissing sound). Ornage stick work every time for me. I don't use flux any more because it is too cumbersome.
If It is Sporland. Then I love it. I don't take the old one out. Just change the gut and cap.
If it is Danfoss. I change it to Sporland

I was using blue rod 45% but I have gone back to flux and 45% wire. It just makes a cleaner looking job. Some of my fellow techs swear by soft solder but since 410 is the current rage for AC they are starting to have to reconsider.
And I stongly support just opinion's last statement!

Clean the distributor up really good, use 45%. Heat is also important, A good tip adjusted right can make a big difference. I use a rosebud.

I also try to solder new txv to distibuter when refer type allows.
Now with R410A I must use oxy/acetylene. I have cooked a few txvs with just using
acetylene(learning curve). I have used 15% and 45% with flux but i am not familiar
with the other types of rods disgust above, are they available at most supply house's?
I also change Danfoss to Sportland.

I agree, 45% wire and flux is the best way to go. Clean joint, add flux, right amount of heat and the 45% will flow just like soft solder.

I use the blue flux coated rods personally, I think they were the best things invented!
