Us to do a good job installing their equipment?

I sold a 2 ton Goodman heat pump system the other day.

My installers put it in and upon start up relized there was NO refrigerant in the condenser. Not because the factory forgot to charge it. It was because the factory forgot to mount the compressor and it fell over during shipping and mashed in the side of the coil!
Its not that I'm trying to bash a brand, but things like this do turn you off from selling that particular brand.

Its not only Goodman; I have seen some unbelievable stuff come out of the boxes of so called premium brands. Makes you wonder whether the assmebly line workers are still stoned on Monday!

Did a job some time back,
Installer was opening up the refrigerant lines after the unit had been leak checked and vacum pump was removed.
The stop ring in the sevice valve had not been installed, He was backing out the suction service valve expecting it to stop at the ring. It came BLOWING out at what ever the off cycle pressure was, and just missed his head.

Even now I still look for the stop ring in the valve body.

That unit was a Bryant, If that matters.

We went back this morning to exchange the condenser.

Opened the new box to check and SAME THING! + it was all beat to hell...

I would be interested in the serieal numbers off those units I've never and I mean Never had a problem like that on my Goodmans. I would like to check my inventory myself.

Not to be overly observant here.
But around here any more its not
"still stoned from the weekend"
It's still seeing pretty colors
from the exstacy.

Speaking of which, your guy did not
notice that the unit was smashed
that bad BEFORE doing the install:)
I have had customers complain when
some of the aluminum(paper thin fins)
are a little crinkled. Its the first
thing I look for when uncrating the
big old heavy things

He said the compressor was lodged in a way that it didn't roll around.
You know how installers are when they are rolling on a job.
He probably had his helper load and unload the unit and set it on the new pad...

I've had one similar experience with Trane. They evidently didn't tighten the set screw on the condenser fan blade. The unit started and ran fine that day. Got a no cool call on it the next day. The fan blade had slid down the shaft, evidently while rotating, and tore the hell out of the inside of the unit. Wiring, coil, refrigerant piping. I replaced the unit that day. I had a similar problem with a Lennox. The condenser fan motor was mopunted to the lid of the unit. It mounted to a solid metal disc in the center surrounded by the louvers. The louvers broke away from the center and the motot, blade and all fell spinning into the unit. Trashed it all.

And when this happens the Homeowner is standing there thinking you're selling them junk and calling you every other day with something they're concerned about...

One thing goes wrong, you make it right, after that you are out there chasing every squeak the squirrells make because the unit may have made a noise.

I have had this happen, but noticed it when we unboxed
condenser, luckly before we took to customers home.

A few of the units, it appeared that compressor was
properly mounted, but someone either dropped crate
on its side, and jarred compressor loose, or did
something just a bad. Either way, compressor had
been knocked loose, and tore up the insides.

I always give the unit a good going over, before
putting into service. Looking for damage, missing
parts, loose items, and terminals not on correctly.

I can not tell how many times, I found something out
of place. This sure saved trouble later on though.

I've had similar disasters with Goodman equipment. Once I found a fan blade totally twisted and mangled. Not a scratch on the box or the unit. No way the unit didn't leave the factory that way. The Goodman distributors get angry with me because I always inspect every unit before loading it, but I could care less. My customers deserve a unit that hasn't already been trashed when it shows up.

You know that oil goodman uses in its shipping pallette that smells like refrigerant oil? I refused to accept units 3 times before I realized that all goodmans ship with that oil. But I've been lucky with them so far...

i got a good friend of mine who almost everytime when he gets a goodman theres a problem with it but ive never had one problem.the first lennox a/h i ever sold-the blower wheel wasnt even tightened.lucky -i found that out in the shop.i had an airtemp heat kit that had contactors and one didnt have any wire going to the coil.little off the subject-just this week i installed a tappan downflow 80% furnace and went to register it on the web and it wouldnt accept the serial no. so i called tappan and they told me the furnace was 7 years old and id half to show proof of purchase for warranty which was no problem.you never know what your gettn it seems like.im with the guy who checks every unit before taking it.5 minutes in the parts house can save hours in the field.

A couple of years ago Trane had a problem with their gas units. At first they though someone was drilling holes in the secondary heat exchangers. Turned out it was some new oil they were using in the manufacturing process that was eating holes in the coils. I don't think there's any manufacturer out there who hasn't had the same problems you and I have. That is, getting consistently great work from the employees. They all have their problems I think. Goodman's no better or worse than the rest. But you're free to purchase whatever brand makes you happy. We used to sell Trane until their product seemed to start slipping after the Home Depot partnership. Now we sell Goodman as our low tier pricing and Bryant as our name brand. Bryant has more bells and whistles but otherwise, I'd be hard pressed to testify in court that one was mechanically more sound than the other. I'd bet both Goodman and Bryant products will need replacing with equal run times.

well said skipped.the brand of equipment you sell doesnt make you or break you. its how you do business.ive had issues with different maufact.and over the years ive learned if your not happy with one drop it like a hot coal and move on to the next.theyll do it to you if the next guy appears he can sell more than you. i speak from experience. its my name on the side of my trucks not any a/c manufacturer.oh and this time i didnt put any name but mine on my new chevy truck. i found it makes it a little easier to drop that hot coal if its name isnt on the side of your truck.lol.you ford guys take it easy on me.

And that is the most valuable piece of advice we all should follow - I know I do - also checking voltages phases is a wise move NO MATTER WHAT BRAND
