I have two 25 ton air cooled split system condensing units (semi-hermetic R-22) that had all of the outdoor refrigeration tubing (external to the unit) stolen. The units have been sitting out in the elements with no protection for about 2 months. One unit is 5 years old and the other is less than 1 year old. What are the chances that I am looking at early compressor failure no matter what steps I take? Any suggestions?

Its a gamble..has rain gotten into the system? has bees made nest in there you can not see? . proper filter changes and evacuations will be necessary to ensure no moisture is present. But still a gamble on leaving a system open to nature for that long of time. They took the piping but not the coils?????

Also start with and oil change and I bet the castings are pretty rusted up and all that oil is going to grab all of those rust flakes pretty quick.

The only reason they didn't take the coils is that the owner had been hit before and actually built a substantial cage around the units. The scum bags managed to cut the lock off the cage and steal the tubing but didn't have enough room to get the coils out!!

What brand splits? What brand semi hermetic compressors? Budget for core filter dryer shells on suction and liquid lines. HH water capacity cores can remove ALLOT of water. The compressors being semi hermetic can be an advantage as you can pull the heads and so on to inspect them.

The splits are Carrier 38AKS machines. I don't remember whose compressors are used but I did plan on pulling the heads.
