One of the best resources for learning about load calculations and equipment selection is the Heatcraft Engineering Manual (http://www.heatcraftrpd.com/resources/misc/H-ENGM0408.pdf).

The load calcs are the "longhand" version of just about all of the porgrams out there today. I highly recommend doing a few to gain a better understanding of how these numbers go together and where they come from.

The equipment selection section starts on p.21 of the manual. Pay particular attention the evaporator TD, what it means and how it affects the system and the space conditions.

For expansion valve selection, I recommend Sporlan Bulletin 10-10 (http://www.sporlanonline.com/10-10_102009.pdf). It's a comprehensive guide for TEV selection. You may also want to read Sporlan Bulletin 10-9 (http://www.sporlanonline.com/10-10_102009.pdf), which explains in great detail what expansion valves are all about.

Finally, I suggest studying the Heatcraft Refrigeration System Installation Manual (http://www.heatcraftrpd.com/res/pdf/H-IM-64L-002.pdf). Lots of good info in there.

1) Learn from every mistake you make (and your going to make a lot)
2) Learn from every mistake the other guy made. (cheaper learning experience)
3) Never forget 1 & 2.

Add ten years +, busting your arse, stepping out of your comfort zone, as the other guys said learn from your and other guys mistakes, take any classes given by any manufacturer worth a crap, Just because a manual says it will work doesn't guarantee it and it sometimes takes experience to realize that something may not work out the way the manufacturer says it will or sometimes it just takes a longer harder closer look to get it right, whatever "it" is.

I think being in a position to teach is an important part of the procedure in excelling in your subject.
I have been doing this (light commercial refrigeration) and studying it for the last 7 years. You keep forgetting or needing to brush up on topics that you do not encounter frequently. But if you were in a position to train others you can never get rusty. I think part of the reason such people like Icemeister can stay so sharp and on top of their subject is their positon here.
You gotta find someone to teach what you learn, not only do it once in a while.
So maybe I can recommend that you do try to answer or search the answers to lower level technicians' questions in this forum rather than only observe the more experienced people's answers to them. Researching information to try to help someone is a great way to learn yourself.
