I am the unfortunate home owner of a Lennox HM30/AM30 unit. Aside from all the usual and annual problems I have had nursing this piece of crap along, I now need to replace the AM30 heat exchanger. The copper tubing on the original heat exhanger has corroded through. Based on what I have researched and learned, the copper corrosion is caused by the high water flow rates through the exhanger, caused by the flow pump just ahead of the exchanger. The local Lennox dealer has been very good to work with but they would rather replace the entire furnace/hot water heater than repair the exchanger. I don't have the cash for that (recent divorce/bills). I am a very skilled home repair type of guy and I have no issue sweating in a replacement heat exchanger.
I am trying to sell my house now, so I need to spend as little as possible to get the heat back on (near Oct here in Green Bay, WI). Does anyone have a Lennox AM30 heat exchanger to sell? Or perhaps better still, does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement heat exchanger which could be fitted to the AM30 air handler?
I have found a few heat exhangers online through wood furnace suppliers, and the prices are very reasonable. The local HVAC dealer quoted me $1800 to replace the heat exchanger. I know I could do it myself for less than 1/4 of that cost. Any help is appreciated.
No more Lennox in my future! Andy
