I'm attending Lincoln Tech HVAC class and would like to get recommendations for a multimeter. I think the Fluke 16 will do. I had most of the handtools so I'm buying the rest myself to reduce my student loan a bit. Suggestions on what to get and where to get it appreciated.

I just ordered a Fluke 87-V, should have it in about a week.
At 480v you trust your life to what the meter says.
Buy the BEST that you can afford.
Fluke, Fieldpiece, Greenlee, Amprobe, etc.

Fluke 16 is very good! But no clamp on. The Fieldpiece HS-36 is under 2 bills and has every thing MOST HVAC techs need.

Fluke makes a nice little "HVAC" kit, with the 16, a thermocouple and a clamp meter.

Fluke HVAC Combo kit link (http://us.fluke.com/usen/products/16+322+KIT.htm?catalog_name=FlukeUnitedStates)

This is an excellent kit for someone just starting out.

Does the Fieldpiece HS36 do Microfarads? Is it really that much better than the Fluke 16? The price difference is $128 for the 16 and $199 for the HS36. I could only find the HS36 online. I assume I will use the clamp meter in the field?

Yes, it is a good meter and it will do everything you need including µfd, µamps and it will wax the condenser while you write up the bill.

Hey.. . there is an unwritten rule here about UEI. All UEI meters are first tested in PA by a team of quality control freaks!
They put the UEI meters thru a series of tests which determine their safety, their durability and their ability to hold up duress!

See PopaDice before choosing any UEI meter.

I got this one at Behler Young. I like it. Had a meterman x30 boss said it was not accurate to his fieldpiece so i got the Fluke Kit.
