Hi all, my father and I started a appliance company in Texas over a year ago, we mainly work on refrigerators, freezers, under counter ice makers, window ac units, etc.. Any way we don't have any experience with 404a. I currently have a type 1 license and a service provider contract that I am filling out asked if I am "certified to use 404a refrigerant?" This got me thinking as it has not come up. I have searched through the forums and have not found any answers, and have looked on the epa's website and found no exact answers there either. Can some one help me clear this up, or point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Robert

If you have an EPA 608 Type 1 certificate, then you are certified to work with R404A on systems containing up to 5 lbs of refrigerant.

The way I understand things, if you have a type 1 certification, you are certified to use any refrigerant including R404a. You have to watch out though because the type 1 only covers small appliances with less than 5lbs of refrigerant. It sounds like that's all you will be working with though, so you should be good.

Thanks ya'll, that is what i thought as well, the type limited me to less than 5lbs, but had no restrictions on refrigerant used.

they also have to be self contained, no split systems for type 1.
