I'm am having repeat seal failures on 3 York YK's (2 w/ R134A, 1 w/ R22) and am looking for some help on diagnosing why. Each machine has been upgraded to the bellows type seal with the external oil feed line. In the past, I've been advised to do the following when replacing the seals:

1. Replace the oil with the seal
2. Replace the oil filter with the .5 micron filter (p/n 026-32386-000)
3. Soak the seal
4. Bridge the snap ring groove with teflon tape to prevent the c-ring from getting scratched
5. Polish the shaft with crocus cloth
6. Check the alignment (parallel & angular), L.S. thrust, and runout on the L.S. shaft and hub

If memory serves, the alignment on the last seal replacement was .014 T.I.R. overall (parallel & angular) yet the seal still went bad. Is there something I'm missing? Also, a few questions:

1. What position (thrust or counterthrust) should the L.S. shaft be in when tightening down the sleeve screws?
2. Must the sleeve screws be tightened down equally using feeler gauges?
3. Why does the YK's have a packed angle valve adjacent to the seal housing when there isn't a seal pressure regulator?
4. Are the seal failures related to low/high oil pressure? High/low oil temp?
5. What should the oil pressure (and seal pressure for that matter) be on machines with R-22? R-134A?

I am a veteran of Carrier and will be happy to trade Carrier centrifugal/screw CSB's for some York CSB's regarding these seals.

If you're a Carrier mechanic, you're being gouged on your seal prices. One option would be to return the seals to John Crane for rebuilding and repair. It's around half the cost of a new one and they could probably give you some insight into your failures.

Out of curiosity, why are Carrier mechanics being gouged any worse than anyone else on the price?

United: Is the e-mail address in your profile correct?

I think it has something to do with previous unpaid billings. Somehow there always seem to be a lead time too...go figure.

Anyway, who is John Crane? Does he warranty the seals? Seeing as how I'm averaging 1 seal every eight months or so, I am definitely interested in the option.

BTW, I'm not with Carrier any more.

They are the folks that make the seals for York / JCI

I've had great success with John Crane thus far, the last seal I got from York cost 10 large and leaked right out of the box. I got nothing but grief from them that I had installed it incorrectly and they wouldn't replace it until I paid for there mechanic to check it out. He confirmed my diagnosis and I was eventually sent a new seal. Since then I have sent them all out to John Crane for about 1/3 the cost. JCI service dept have tried to collect for there man's labor for 2 years and they're still waiting.
