According to Dunn& Bradstreet

There are

about 146,000 HVAC companies in the US

Approximately 970,000 HVAC employees

70% of the HVAC companies employ 4 or fewer technicians

There are currently about 21,000 NATE certified technicians

Dunn and Bradstreets numbers will always be inaccurate for any industry. My old boss taught me years ago not to give them any info about your company and I've followed his advice for decades. They don't even call me anymore.

Nevertheless, the figures you gave are interesting. I'm assuming that there are probably more hvac people than they're showing.

I beleive that the average look of the average HVAC/R contractor is about 4 employees. I'd say thats very close to what I always see on the street. However as far as how many are actually out there. I don't trust that number.

You have to pay them to have them list you as a commercial business and provide you with their esteemed credit rating. Don't get me wrong. I beleive having the rating helps you. All I am saying is that not every contractor in the country has an account with them. So if their only counting how many deal with them, that number I would say is way off.
