I am looking to replace my 3-ton split AC / Apollo hydroheat system and have been considering geothermal. I have 2 quotes so far and would like some feedback on certain aspects of one quote in particular. Excerpt from quote:

We propose to replace your heating and air conditioning system with a new geothermal heating and cooling system to include:
1-AP035 Florida Heat Pump Aquarius II 2- stage 3.0 ton variable speed split system with air handler in attic and condenser in garage. Unit is 28/19 eer in 1st/ 2nd stages, 4.8/4.1 cop in 1st /2nd stages. Unit has hot water recovery with 28 gallon “buffer” tank installed next to condenser in garage adjacent to the water heater. New refrigeration tubing run down wall to condenser. NO VEHICULAR PROTECTION IS INCLUDED. Add $350.00 if required by inspections department. www.fhp-mfg.com.

Install XCI Controls SZ2 zone control system with 2- zones in house. Customer provides additional 2 stage thermostat for upstairs. Modify ductwork to accept new machine and zoning. New drain pan.

Install 3.0 ton ground loop consisting of 2- 210’ holes with 2-1” loops per hole , in backyard behind house with 1 ¼” supply and return to pumping package in garage. All fused connections. All per IGSPHA standards with manufacturer’s 50 yr. warranty. Pumping package/purging station mounted in garage next to unit. Backfilled and leveled out, no finish landscaping.

I thought it interesting that the system this company uses involves 2 loops per borehole - the owner provided the quote and said they have had great success with this method in the Raleigh/Durham area of NC.

Any thoughts on this method?

One loop per bore hole is standard. The winters are not as brisk compared northern climate. Two speed is good, better control. Be sure to have purged with purge cart, not just the circ pumps.
