Nope. As a matter of fact, until a couple of years ago, DC used the SSN as a drivers license number.

Common sense will tell you not to reveal it to anybody that doesn't need it, lest you wind up with credit card bills that you don't possess the card for.

I also believe that the SSN is used for small business owners for Tax ID purposes, so Uncle Sam can get his tithe.
