I have been slowly painting the inside of my house. I hate the smell of paint and it makes me dizzy. Why is that, oxygen displacement? I feel like ive drank a 12 pack.

Last time I painted I got so loopy while holding the paint tray I didnt realize I had tilted it to a 45 degree angle and the waterfall sound i heard while I was looking up, was actually about 1/2 a gallon of paint puddling on the carpet.

How often do you repaint the inside of your house? and do you hire someone or are you a DIY'er. Painting blows.

Plus my wife doesnt paint, among other things. :gah:

LOL! Sure... Where are you at???

You know what they are.... But since you asked:

"Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects."

etcetera, blah blah blah, fumes from a paint can in other words.

New carpet is really bad for it.

If you are using 'oil base' or Alkyd paint, then yes you will get 'high' from the fumes. If latex based (preferrable), then the fumes are not that strong.

I would have an open window and a fan regardless. IMO painting is something to be done in the spring and fall when the HVAC business is slow.

Use latex, not alkyd paint inside.

I lived in my house for almost 6 years before the colors (or lack of) inside drove me nuts and I decided to do something about it.

After spending a ton of money on paints, a lot of time preparing the walls for paint (filling holes etc), then moving all the crap out of the way so I could get to the walls... It lost all of it's luster of fun. Couple that with the fact that I suck at painting, I can do the tedious stuff great for a while (trim), but after a while you just want to get done, so you rush, that makes things go slower.

Fast forward like a year or so, I've got most of the house painted, just a couple rooms that are half painted. One of these days I'll get around to finishing it.

I've never had any problems of getting loopy from the paint fumes, but they could add some opiate type fumes to help make it more enjoyable

Latex isn't too bad - oil is horrible.

Low VOC paint is available.

Years ago I bought this old trailer house that I wanted to fix and rent out. I had seen enough guys have rentals work out and thought I would start with something cheap to get my feet wet. Well I had things down to painting and it was cold outside. I had the great idea of shutting the place up and I used Kilz the original. I'm not sure if the latex version was even out back then. It didn't seem to bother me or at least so I thought. I got done and drove home late that night. Went to bed and started freaking out. The boys came out and at the time I think they had to be about 6 and 7 maybe. I thought they were trying to kill me,ha. I was running from them and they started in chasing after me as they thought it was a game.
Wife was in hiding the guns and knives and called the ambulance. They came and thought I was drugged but then wife mentioned painting and they asked with what and how. Bottom line is that stuff will kill you.
