my boss is 60 years old, had the company for 35 years

obviously college grad, catholic school and a very nice man.

one of the guys was speaking to him and said "DUDE!"

this is a tough economy and that statement might cost this guy 100k a year basically!!!!!!!!!!!

just a note to you young guys

do not say "DUDE" to your boss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bad idea!!!!!1:gah:

I wander what was the essence of their conversation that brought up word "dude".
Seems to me that it could be some disagreement from the get go.

Sounds like your 60 yr old boss is just that...some young kid saying dude shouldn't put his job in the line of fire..it's a common term now days, has been for quite some time now.. sort of sounds like the kind of guy you would have to walk on eggshells around, " just a note to the young kids?...making 100k a year?? sorry just my 2 cents..

Good that guy wasn't in the Army. Can you imagine him addressing his boot camp sergeant as dude?

It would also be fun to see him on the Judge Joe Brown show.

Is "dude" an offensive word in the States?

Seems a bit daft to take offence if none was meant, taking what was not offered, and if offence was meant, why take it? its what they want you to do!

Jon :couchhide:Dude is not a offensive word. In this instance it probablly the wrong word to use at the time. For example, if the person saw his boss and said" Dude, my wife just called and said she was pregnant, Im going to be a daddy" there would not be a problem. If the boss was having a sit down with the employee about some kind of problem, the employee saying dude could be taken as the employee has an attitude problem.

Dude...what's the big deal? I wouldn't work for a boss who had a problem with the word "dude" anyway.

I've always spoke to my supervisors as "one of the guys". Whether you are intimidated by your boss or not, why show it? If your making $100k a year it's obviously because you know what you're doing not because your boss selected you because you were afraid of him and would make a good servant.

I'm a bit out of practice with employers having worked for myself the last seven years, and even before then i never used to be one for formalities, i think respect is more how you say something, than what you say.

But having said this i sometimes get called to fix fridges in kebab and curry take aways, and sometimes the workers there will say " yes boss" or refer to me in such a way and rather than showing respect it feels more like i'm being branded as a steriotypical 'whitey' though i expect its just that they know few words of english.

Hell, I got a 35 year old son. I always greet him with "Hey, Dude".

If a helper calls me Dude in front of a customer I would get on him. Not business-like at all.

In private I would have no problem with it.

It's better than what my friend calls me..."Pimp Daddy".

In front of a 75 year old Female customer he called me that ....he didn't stay with me long cause he went out on his own.

I would never have had the heart to fire him. he's always there when I need help.

This is funny, 2 days ago my oldest son (14) called me "dude". Told him Dad or my name is fine, no "dude".

So I just called him over to read your OP, to see what he thought. Man, he was reading that post a long time. I think he was fixated on your Avatar lady...
