View Full Version : Domestic fridge
double bogey

I am replacing my (domestic) refrigerator/freezer and have a couple of questions. I am seeing models with dual evaps, does the compressor change capacity when only one evap is calling? My older fridge had one evap and a duct which brought cooling to the fridge compartment. This never seemed to get the correct balance, either freezing the fridge or freezer not cold enough. Anyway, does anyone have any experience with the dual units? Just want to be sure I get something that will last and do a good job.

No it does not, if one part is satisfied, it will put the extra capacity to the compartment that is still calling.

Look at the Sub-Zero line if you got the cash. Two compressors and three evaporators.

You need alot of cash for a Sub-Zero. Mostly to pay for the repairs :)
My Sub-Zer has gone through:
main power switch
3 freezer evap fans
one fridge evap fan
two ice makers
Ice auger thing
ice dispenser switch (only sold as part of the whole in door assembly for $300. Luckily I was able to hack it up myself with parts from radio shack)
It is 20 years old, but most of these parts failed in the first 10 years

The people i know swear by them. But then they have not had the problems you had. Personally to rich for my blood. I like the duel refrigeration set up though. You must be rich ? What kind of car do you drive ?:p

I recently got a new fridge. I bought the cheapest one I could get that was a decent size.I expect to throw it away in a few years. In my opinion, there has not been a good refrigerator made in 30+years. The piece of garabage that i bought keeps the beer cold, the frozen stuff frozen, and my electric bill went down. It will not touch the quality and durability of the 1978 G.E. it replaced.

I go to the dump and recover the refrigerants from refrigerators and I have seen alot of refers that are only 5 years old.Yea they do not make them like they used to.Personally I would get the simplest refer I could find and I would stay away from one that have a control board if you can still find them.

Yea,And I found a stainless Ref.only 3 years old on the street looked new.Checked it out,bad start relay. It is now full of cold beer.My point people are throwing out suff to fast today, just because they think it's not made well

I think people aren't comfortable dumping money into an appliance to repair it. Who wants to risk dumping a few hundred dollars into an appliance you can replace for a grand or less. Now if you have that Sub-Zero, you would be more likely to spend for repair. By the way, I bought a basic side by side with ice and water, no electronics I can see. I'm pretty sure my old one had a clogged cap tube, but I didn't consider fixing it as it never performed well to begin with.

I think you made a good choice.I hope it does you good .You said it has no electronics. So they still make them like that I was not sure if they did or not.I sure hope they quit making appliances with control boards I have seen so many control boards that have failed in the first 5 years.Good luck with your new frige

The one I bought has a thermostat and a defrost timer. That was the dealmaker for me (and it was cheap). I think only the "low end stuff" does not have the electronics.

Two weeks ago I worked on a 1977 sub Zero. Condenser coil hadn’t been clean since her husband past away. Cleaned it up and work better than my 11 month old fridge. Just like cars some people get lemons.

Electronics and household refrigerators have not been a good marriage. The high cost of electronic componrents just to see if you need another has ruined a once profitable business. Consumers are reluctant to spend $350 just to see if there is anything else wrong.
I do not see this trend changeing. Manufactures are buying electronic components for peanuts then selling them for gold when they fail.
Not good for a household appliance repair based business.
