View Full Version : Help! Crossed Wires

I was adding a new programmable thermostat and crossed some wires and smoke came out of the transformer?
I connected:
G to Black
Y to Yellow
R to Red
W to White
O to Orange
nothing to Purple
I thought purple wire was out of place so I didnt connect it. After the smoke and nothing coming on I did some reasearch and discovered that purple should have been green.
So I believe that the thermostat bridged R (Red wire, 24 Vac Power to be switched) to Black wire (hooked to G, Fan).
So...what do you think I fried? How much damage did I do?
Thanks for your help.

You have to use an EPA approved recovery machine and recover the smoke, then refill the transformer back up with new virgin transformer smoke.

If your lucky it's just the transformer.......:beat:
Now would be a good time to call a pro before you do anymore damage,,,

I hate when the tranzformers loose their smoke they just dont seem to work as good. LOL now because you didnt call a pro that home depot thermostat is going to cost you five times. The best is when a DIY tries to put a strait heating and cooling stat with a heat pump and they wonder what these extra wires are for.

Green to Purble? Or was that Green to Red? Yea, Green to Black is Correct.
Those cheap 'stats are Junk too. Odds are it's Toast along with the other "Thingy" that the Smoke Came out of!
That part the Smoke came out of is going to cost 2 or 3 (5) times more than the Thermostat!
Get'em to check the Sub-Cooling when he repairs the stuff you shorted out.

Yes, that's what I was going to suggest. It always works for me. Sometimes the new smoke is better than the cheap smoke the transformer maker puts in there, and I get more current (better electrons) from the transformer.

Sometimes when the supply house is a little to far or closed, I'll take a big drag off my Marlboro. That will usually buy you some time.

I think an unfiltered cig would give you better voltage.

Transformers shouldn't smoke, it's bad for the lungs and causes emphysema.
Maybe we need to get that transformer the patch?
In all seriousness, "You can screw it up, we can help"

where do i get this smoke recovery unit i could really use one!
i blew a transformer my first rodeo but i took all the wires off and re hooked them 2 airhandler just for practice
u can smell a bad transformer
and call the pros your rev valves may be wrong your bridge is way wrong green wire goes to green not black purple is tied in with auxilary heat in the air handler with some units so u mite have an auxilary heat problem not imformation to deduct anything but that the stats hooked up wrong

the lack of smoke in the transformer throws off your sub-heating and supercool

I read a thread here were one poster would check his cap tubes for restrictions that way. Just disconnect at the filter and see how fast it sucks it in. Watch out a little knowledge is dangerous. :beat:

Everyone's system has had the smoke escape before......either volutary or caused. You won't believe me, but you actually need a service call on this one, as someone has to trace what wire does what. the little stickers they give you in that t-stat box are as worthless as tits on a bull...no pro I'm aware of uses them.

When you call the HVAC guy to fix it see if he hooks up his gauges once he installs the new transformer ( smoke filled of course).
This will tell you if he's a true professional.

An unfiltered cig may give you better voltage but don't you think the sine wave may be a little distorted without the filter installed? Also without the filter, what would keep the whole thing from being destroyed by harmonics???
Try installing an EK-083 in the loop.

:gah: get on with the program, son. This ain't 1976 anymore. All the new ones are fully hermetic and no gauge connection ports.

:rules:OMG, I was laughing my rear-end off. I went around the block several times chasing that smoke and even called the EPA to find out about the "smoke recovery machine". My dad is a EE and he laughed at me too.
But in all seriousness, he taught me to read the schematics and indeed, it was the transformer. :rules:
So its nice and chilly now, and time to figure out what I can screw up next...:couch:
