I recently walked in the house and heard a loud squealing sound from the HVAC closet. Flipping the DHW switch to off makes it go away. Plumbers had been doing some work and cut off the house's main water supply.

Contractor will check it out but any chance it is permanently damaged?

Yes, there is a very good chance it is permanently damaged. I'm doing the armchair quarterback thing from miles away, but it sounds like the pump bearings are gone, probably due to an air lock.

Agree with hvacguy. Keep a new pump on hand, but sometimes clearing the air and burping the pump can solve it.
