I have some concern with the installer wiring with my new Trane system that I'm sure someone can clear up.

T803 Tstat
XV80 Model TUD080R9, 2 Stage Heat, Variable Speed
XR13 3 Ton, Model 4TTR3036A1

The W2 terminal at the T803 & at the control board in the heat unit are not wired. The Trane installer's guide indicates that it is required for the 2nd stage heat call. My installer is telling me that he is letting the control board
make the call which is done 10 minutes after first stage request. The guide indicates this is how a one stage Tstat operates. There is no jumper between W1/W2. With the absence of the W2 lead, am I getting the full benefit of the 2 stage heat?

Another concern I have is the absence of the high velocity filter that was packaged with the unit. The Installer says the existing filter at my return grill will be sufficient.

Thanks for your help.

If you have a two stage t-stat and there are enough wires in the wall, I would let the t-stat control the heat staging, not the board. It doesn't hurt anything to let the board time the second stage on, but with the stat controlling the staging, it will warm your house quicker during recovery from setback, basically skipping first stage and going straight to second stage.

Thanks,

I like you reasoning better than his. Any comments on the filter?

Are you referring to a high capacity or media filter? I'm not sure what you mean by a high velocity filter. I'm guessing you have a 1" filter right now.

The Trane installer guide says that my unit will require a "high velocity" filter (and is being furnished with the unit) and gives instructions on how to install it in the unit. It's not installed and the Trane installer says it's not required because the filter I have at my return is OK. But it's just a normal filter from Lowes (not designated high velocity). Am I creating air flow problems with the normal type?

I wouldn't worry about the filter that came with the unit, but I agree the installer should have the thermostat control staging if there are enough wires at the t-stat.

Thanks to those who replied. All concerns were answered. I can wire the W2 terminal myself. Great site.

Remember that you'll have to tell the thermostat that you are now controlling 2 stages of heat, via the installer setup menu.
