I've been thinking about the hybrid heat systems. My question is, would it be possible to keep the gas furnace that I have now (since it isn't that old) and just upgrade to a heat pump (with the new coil), or would the furnace absolutely need changed out too? I figured on just using the furnace for when it was too cold for just the heat pump to operate.
Thoughts?

Depends on the fan capacity, but if was enough fan for AC then I don't see why a cased coil for HP wouldn't work

Yeah, I think it was like a 5 speed fan. It runs on the medium speed for the heat and high for the AC>

Then by all means keep your existing furnace. What brand is your furnace? I would keep it all the same manufacturer if possible.
Model number of your furnace please?

From the info you give, it sounds like away to go. Depending on your t-stat you may need some additional controls. Like a duel fuel kit or i find the Honeywell vision-pro8000 with the outdoor sensor works really good.

What do you call "not that old"? 10 years? 15 years?
