I have a Janitrol home cooling system, with a heat pump, my air handler is stored in the attic. The problem is that the freon line outside my house keeps freezing up. The air handler will not turn on. Now I can turn on the air handler manually and then turn the thermostat to cool and it will run and keep the house cool but it will run until I turn it off.If I switch to auto for the fan it will not turn on and the compressor outside will run continiously, freezing the freon line. Now this happens on hot days.In the evenings when it is cool outside the system runs with no problems. I have had a Hvac man come to the house, he checked the freon level and said it was good, he also replaced the thermostat. I am still having the same problems. Any ideas THANKS

You have a complex mechanical issue within your air handler that will require a visit with a trained service technician...

sounds like the t-stat to me

Ideas...yah...call a company that knows what they're doing...freeze up is being caused by the blower which is not running with the tstat in auto position...possible relay or wiring issue...and your now the proud owner of a new tstat that probably didn't need replaced.

Have a service tech come and check your blower speed and and also check to see if your evap coil is blocked. could be a restriction in the suction line. I'm not to sure with out looking at your system.

Blower Speed...No
Evap Coil blocked...No
Restriction...No

Is this an old furnace with a fan center and a combination fan/limit control with a manual switch? Could be the relay in the fan center. Or the cooling relay on a control board.

This problem could be many things, but even a ok heat pump guy should be able to find the solution! Make sure the fan switch is all the way into the auto position and not midway. If some cooling guy that does not like heat pump and does not understand them did it he could not have wired it correctly. All screws holding t/s to subbase must be tight. Could be 2 bad t/s also but not likly. Many hvac guys do not understand heat pumps wiring.

Looks like you bought a new stat for nothing. It sounds like the system has been miswired also sounds like you need to find a new service company.

Forget the freezing of your refrigerant lineset (piping) your unit seems to be miswired from tstat to airhandler somehow. Hard to tell without actually seeing whats going on. When you say your turning the unit on "manually" what exactly are you doing? Some programmable tstats have a 5-8 minute time delay..are you waiting to see what happens after you set temp at tstat?

I saw this problem in reverse this summer - the blower ran continuously in on and auto position. The root cause was a faulty sequencer which Janitrol used as a fan relay. If that sequencer failed closed it is just as likely that yours failed open.

Looks like control problems - but i doubt its a fan realay - if he can turn on the fan from the stat the fan realy is working. Its gona take a tech that knows heat pumps to sort it out.

I have the same issue. The tech says it is a motor issue, because the motor doesn't spin freely. It spins fine, one year later the problem is getting worse and i replaced the cap. but to no avail.

Maybe a relay?
Thermostat?

Sounds like your time delay relay to fan is bad.
1-2 N/O
1-3 N/C
Stuck in normal closed and without voltage from heat strip will not work auto in cool.

Goodman had several problems with this time delay, I usally just replaced with small relay and wired according to orginal wiring.

I would not think that it is relay problem. Usually the same relay is used if you are in auto or on with the fan switch. If you can manualy turn the fan on and off at the switch the relay or control module should be ok. I wonder if we really have all the details. Maybe you have a contactor at the outside unit sticking, making the ac continue running when the blower kicks off. That can sometimes be a intermitent problem. A experienced service tech should be able to look at the contacts and tell if there fried. If the refrigerent lines are froze outside then the coil inside is froze and you will not have airflow out of the registers. I have had many costumers mistake this for a blower not running. Just some ideas.
