We hired a new tech about 4 months ago.He seemed knowledgable and had all the licenses needed. We checked his references and all were favorable except one. He was in partnership with another guy and it didnt work out. I always say a partnership is a sinking ship. Anyways, lately we have been getting about a 50% call back on his service calls He always seems to have an excuse for all of them. However, this week i went on one of his 'recalls' and found 3 refrigerant leaks on a compressor he installed on tuesday. He had piss poor brazing joints and i just shook my head. Im going to see what lame excuse he will have tomorrow.I will keep u posted.

I can't say about Canada, but out here you have to get a mile long paper trail before you fire someone and then you STILL get sued - but at least you have a good chance of winning if you spend enough on a lawyer. If only "at will employment" was a reality.

Ira, are you originally from CA? If so, how did you end up (dare I say it on this forum?) a conservative. If you're not from CA, why do you stay?

I've spent a lot of time in CA from SF to LA. Didn't leave a thing their I'd go back for.

The part I dont like is he has an excuse for it always. If he just admitted he struggled and things came hard and he was a good worker and worth training be one thing, but passing the buck is a whole nother issue. Is it mostly stupid stuff where he was in a hurry and overlooked?Does he have stuff going on at home and he doesnt have his head in the game?

I must say I am sort of the same way. I am always the one to diagnose but if there's something to be brazed I have another guy do the fix. If there is something electrical he calls me, we're a great team. Sometimes it's not the most efficient way to do things but the customer always gets great quality workmanship and we don't have call backs.

My point is, everyone has thier weaknesses. Consider trying somthing like what I do, it works great.

When I first started out-I sucked at oil furnaces-badly!I think my first 5 oil calls were all callbacks.Fortunately my boss was frank and said I can see you need more training in oil, lets make it happen.Had me ride with a guy and did nuttin but oil furnaces for 2 days.I learned a lot More that my whole HVAC school oil class ever could teach me.I thank him to this day-he coulda ran me outta there, but he musta saw something in me and bit the bullet-worked well for him and me.

My job is so diverse that I don't do a lot of any one thing, including brazing. However, I AM the master of the mental aspects of the work I do. Or at least, I try to be. Or is it that I'm the master of being mental? I can never remember.

Yeah bootlen, born and bred in this wacko state. I stay because family roots are here. Otherwise I would have been gone a long time ago.

I'm not saying I can't do it, I have several times but there are guys far better than me. It just makes more sense to me to troubleshoot it, send another out to repair it. I then move on to troubleshoot another. Troubleshooting, electrical, and controls are my real strong points. I also love playing with gas and geothermal units. I love brain work, not a big fan of the back breaking, no brainer stuff. The bigger the challenge, the more I love it.

unfortunately we dont have enough man power to send 3 different techs to the same call. Around here you have to troubleshoot and repair your own calls.

I've always done my own repairs. Never liked going on someone else's diagnosis.

Might start a new policy callbacks are done after work hours on tech's time or if during normal hours that time is subtracted from their pay. Of course since no one is infallible give me them 3 strikes first three are on you. Also, a monthly board listing tech productivity is good with a little $$$ prize for the one with the least callbacks/best attendance etc.

Bonuses. Be careful how you implement them.

http://www.alfiekohn.org/managing/fbrftb.htm

If you have a single tech who's typically better than the rest, he'll when the bonus every month and the other techs will not care about about the bonus. They may even start to resent the bonus or that tech.

YOU WISH YOU HAD "FIRE AT WILL"
LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT FLORIDA, THIS IS A RIGHT TO WORK STATE AND ON EVERY JOB APP THERE IS A CLAUSE THAT SAYS FIRE AT WILL.
NOW I HAVE BEEN ON BOTH ENDS OF THE STICK, IF YOU ARE HAVEING TROUBLE WITH CALLBACKS ON HIM, LET HIM KNOW,TELL HIM, IT IS COSTING MONEY AND TROUBLE FOR THE COMPANY.
NOW REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN NOT FIRE HIM WITH OUT DUE CAUSE OR PAPER WORK , BUT YOU CAN CUT BACK HIS HOURS SO HE MIGHT BE INCLINE TO MOVE ON?
THEN ON THE OTHER HAND IF YOU COME TO WORK THAT DAY AND YOUR BOSS IS PISS OFF THAT HE DIDN'T GET LAID THE NIGHT BEFORE OR HAD A FIGHT WITH HIS WIFE OR KID AND GENERALY BEING A PEACE OF HUMAN GARBAGE, AND COMES TO YOU AND OTHERS AND TELLS YOU TO HIT THE DOOR AND THEN GOES TO YOUR TRUCK AND THROWS YOUR TOOLS AND PERSONAL BELONGINGS TO THE STREET
WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT HE CAN GET AWAY WITH IT!!!
THEN YOU THINK TWICE ABOUT THAT CLAUSE, IT IS A DOUBLE EDGE SWORD. I HAD ALLWAYS THOUGH THAT UNIONS WERE BAD, BUT HERE IN FLORIDA I HAVE SEEN OWNERS LIVE IN HIGH ON THE HOG AND TREET THERE EMPLOYEES LIKE GARABGE. AND KNOW THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE WHOM HE CAN SUCKER TO WORK FOR THE COMPANY.
SO IF HAVE A FAMILY AND A HOME, YOU GO TO WORK EVERY DAY KNOWING THAT TO DAY MAY BE YOUR LAST.
YES YOU WANT IN THE SUN SHINE STATE YOU WILL PAY FOR IT EVERY DAY.
THANKS
