I have hvacpro and the dx9100 program on my new laptop and it doesn't seem to want to cooperate with it. I use a usb to serial adapter and it says " the com1 port is currently ion use by a dos program would you like to change it" no matter what I say " yes or no" it locks up and I have to end the task. anyone know of a fix for this?

It took me 5 adapters to get it to work and then that adapter will not work on my other laptop so what i did is bought a ibm 600x with a serial port and use this for most of my jci stuff..
used ibm was $300 and worth it

I had the same problem with Trane TechView. I ended up buying a laptop with an onboard serial port.

The thing that raelly bugs me is that everything else I use works ok with it. I use pcmedit, upcmedit, solopro, etc..
the johnson program is the only one that doesn't work.

are u running winxp or win98? We had the same problem and ended up putting win98se on our laptop and it worked fine.

I am using win2k but I updated to the hvacpro for win2k. the problem seems to be that it doesn't like a usb to serial adapter.

Many of the programs I use specifically state "no USB to Serial adapter". I bought a PCMCIA to Serial adapter off E-bay when I upgraded my laptop... works nice. JC and CCN were the worse with this issue.

Was a solution ever found that will allow us to run HVAC Pro on a newer laptop that has only USB Ports?

If so, could you pleae post a hardware make and model number? :)

We have tried several USB/Serial adaptors. JCI includes the Digi Edgeport/1 with the AS-CVTPRO300-1 and it has worked on everything we tried it on from Win2K to Win7(not 64 bit).

Some of the other brands worked but the issue is that you have to assign the adaptor to COM1 or COM2 every time you plug it in. The Digi only required assignment once and then works every time. the Digi is a bit pricey (hundred bucks or so). We have gotten some of the fifteen dollar ones to work but wasted a lot of time doing it.

I've been seeing this problem for many years now and for the life of me I don't understand why control guys don't buy laptops with serial ports. I buy and use them all the time.

Good day John,

Do a search on here and you will find a few brands that will work including our S2USB485 device (USB to RS-485 and RS-232 as well as built-in N2 bus diagnostics). If you are using Win7 (32 or 64) we have a couple of installation documents on our website (info in my profile) that steps you through what you need to do to have HVACPro operating under Win7 using our device. However, the steps should be very similar to other USB to Serial devices.
