Dear all

We are doing research about energy saving in commercial buildings. We are interested in knowing annual energy cost for commercial buildings. We simulated a building using the software Energyplus and we knew the total energy consumption (Joul) and peak demand for each month (KW). Now we are interested in knowing usage cost and demand cost for the commercial building. I will appreciate anyone could provide us some information about energy cost and how to change energy consumption (Joul) to bill (dollar). Thank you very much.

There are two good tools for energy benchmarking:

http://poet.lbl.gov/cal-arch

http://www.energystar.gov

I find these pages are pretty useful for ballpark numbers.

Usually 3-4 parts of a bill.

Meter Charge
$$ Flat Charge

Energy Charge
$/kw-h charge (convert joules to kW-h)

Demand charge
$/kw peak demand charge (varies from utility to utility). Usually a commercial account is billed the highest demand of the last XX months, and that charge is carried over from month to month.

Peak demand charge
$/kw charge for demand accrued during peak periods.

Power factor penaly
Varies from utility to utility.

Many utilities have their rate schedules published on the internet. You might want to check the website for your utility.
