View Full Version : the oil return ofCarrier's centrigufal chiller

we have a carrier' centrifugal chiller is now facing an erratic problem. It can run no failure, except of the continuous drop of the oil level. And the oil reclaim from the cool is ok.how could it be?

if the oil return from the volute is workong and your refrigerant charge is ok then you have an o-ring inside the compressor is causin the loss - YOU need to get a qualified tech to open it up!!!!! no easy way

Do u mean that the oil still in compressor, not in system?

If the charge is too far off, at low loads you will get no oil return with too low a charge or too much with too much charge and wash the oil out of the compressor. That is usually shown by a lot of foaming in the compressor and a kind of violent look to the last sight glass down stream from the eductor The should be just a nice lazy kind of trickle of oil in the last sight glass on it's way back to the sump sfter the eductor which draws on the bottom of the vane cavity. The skimmer line should show some activity at low loads but nothing when you've got a good load on the machine.

If you are above say 75% and can't keep the oil, time for the Carrier van. If you gotta buy the parts anyway, having the OEM guys do the work and give you some kind of guarantee is usually pretty cheap.

Don't ya' love the way the ones starting the threads "Always" post their findings on problems such as these?? I would think that 2 years would be enough time to find the cause/cure of his/her problem..
