I have a 24-year old General Electric refrigerator. Is there a substitute refrigerant (like FR-12 or Freeze12) that can be used to top off an old R12 system? What is involved in converting the unit to R134a?

Go with R-420 or R-409, if your going to put the time in.

If the units that old and you need to put to many parts in it, replace it.
Don't spend the time to go to R-134a.

My thoughts,

You have to be EPA certified purchase any R-12 substitute. a 134a conversion would likely not be successful on a unit that old

I am EPA certified, but my work had been primarily on R22 split systems in the apartment industry. I have an opportunity to be given a new refrigerator (less tha 1 year old) in about 4 months. However, I need to limp my old unit across the finish line until then. So could I use FR12 or something like it to top off my system?

rcb2,
do a search on this site for mixing refrigerants.

You'll find out you can in some cases. One blend (R420) says you can (??????) I think another says the same.
Good luck,
Yuma.

Hot shot r-414B is the best replacement for r-12 I've used
works great on ge refrigerators, cars etc.
use 80% to volume or if you would normally use 10 oz of r-12 use 8 oz r-414b and you don't have to worry about oil compatability.

I agree with kool it man. You can add it right to the r12 and it'll work...
