Dan,
The Carrier line-up starts with a Base level, then a Comfort level, then a Performance level, and then the premium Infinity level..
That said, the new carrier Performance 16 is a Comfort level unit with a Infinity control board in it to allow the use on a infinity system.. If you sat a Comfort 2-stage 16HP next to a Perfomace 2-stage 16hp, you would notice no differance in looks or design until you looked at the control board in the outside unit.. This unit was only designed for one reason entry level Tax credit eligible capatability with the infinity control system..
Don't get me wrong it is a nice unit but not up to the performance name and standards of quietness and not as beefy.. No windswept fan blade, no isolated compressor mounts and plate, thiner compressor jacket...
This unit was put in the performance family only because it is capable of being controled with the infinity control.. and the Comfort 2-stage is not but is the same unit..
Carrier is using this unit as a replacement for the infinity 2-stage 25hna6 which is now discontinued and they want to allow a less expensive option to the top of the line infinity..
Good unit but I wish it had some of the old standards of the performance line..
Goodluck

when you go with the equipment be sure to spend the few bucks on the infinity t-stat. doing other wise would be doing a great disservice to yourself. infinity t-stat will control everything for you is set up properly. even de-humidify your home in the summer.
also be sure you ask about the a/c indoor coil. "is it a new coated indoor coil". coils tend to be affected by indoor air quality. Chinese sheet rock impurities, and so on. new coils have been sprayed with coating to solve the problem.
happy blue label clout. enjoy the system.

I was told by the buy I spoke with the it is the exact unit as the infinity series, he didn't say anything about the sound jacket or fan blades being different, Hmm I'll have to ask him about that before I think about having him do the Job if at all. I do have the infinity controller already as I have the INfinity 3 stage furnace and want to true hybrid system which is what I'm wanting to achieve when all is said and done nothing less and just as when I buy my shop tools and machinery I don't mind spending the top buck for the best of the best just the way I have always been. So if any is in the north eastern Wisconsin area Sheboygan to be exact and need some work I would love to have someone or a couple of guys from here to quote me on a HP to pair up with my furnace.
well, when you look at the Performance 17, it doesnt LOOK like a performance line or Infinity line... it's also louder than a Performance 15 which shares the same case design as the Infinity 21.
