My daughter is purchasing a condo that has a twenty-five year old Magic Chef PWC heat pump. I saw a Cold Point replacement but it is only a 9 or 10 seer.

Is there a more efficient direct replacement for the Magic Chef ?

Any brand has more efficient than 9 SEER. The minimum SEER is now 13, so all brands start there. You just need to find a unit that will fit in the available space.

These units must have found a loophole on ratings being a specialty product. Looking at NCP, Magic Pak and First Co, none were rated in SEER, but only EER. All were well below 13 too. So anything today would beat the 25 year old relic but they are far from the efficiency of a traditional split or packaged unit.

I'm not sure this applies,it depends on the A coil,but Magic Chef is now Armstrong.
I would highly recomend a complete system changeout to get the federal rebate and to avoid future problems.I would also highly reccomend the 10 year parts and labor warranty.

This is a VTAC, an overstuffed PTAC that mounts in a wall sleeve but is ducted.

I sent an email to the contractor who had his sticker on the unit in question. His answer is this;

Replacements that fit are available, but they are not manufactured in 13 SEER or higher...
The options would be a heat pump unit or a cooling unit with electric heat pack.10.9-12 SEER

Now the problem is due to the condo association rules that do not permit split systems. :eek2:
