Hello:

I am tight on time and have a student calling me for an answer to this problem. It's been a while since I have physically put my hand on one of these old Lennox systems, but here's the problem:

This unit is a Lennox Whisper heat, model G20Q3E-75-6. Basically, from what the student told me, when he turns on the unit, the gas stays on for 15 seconds, then cuts out. Then the automatic burner door closes. I ruled out the blower being bad because he said that the unit only runs for 15 seconds before cutting the gas, which would not be enough time to trip the limit switch if the low speed fan was bad.

Anyway, I am thinking (not being there to physically help him) that there is probably not enough voltage going to the gas valve long enough to keep it open. Anyone with recent experience with this type of unit would be appreciated. I worked on this unit over 15 years ago, and Lennox has never been my favorite brand since they always use proprietary controls, forcing you to only be able buy theirs.

Replace it. Tell him to locate the cracks in the heat exchanger.(that isnt the issue.) Just sayin.
