Cold Air return problem

Hi,

Can someone give me an idea of what my problem might be? Every cold air register in my house gets built up with dust and black soot. The carpeting around the cold air registers is getting black. The clothes hanging in the closets for storage have brown crud all over the shoulders where they hang on the hangers. There is some smoking in the house but never in the bedrooms.

I need help in pinpointing my problem as it is driving me crazy. No amount of cleaning the duct work as far as I can get by hand seems to help. Thank you in advance

Funny.

You might have to have someone take a look at your system, beginning at the unit. There could be a number of causes, and you can't expect to fully clean your ductwork by only getting as far as you can reach.

Thank you for your responses. I had not thought of burning candles as being a cause for this. It is pretty bad.

Yes, I probably should have the unit looked at but thought I would ask the question here first so I could get a better idea of what I'm looking for.
