Well just looking into apprenticeship program around tallahassee fl, their number was disconnected, called local 234 in jacksonville they closed down the shop in tallahassee and jacksonville took them over, Talking to the secretary they havent even took apprentices in 2yrs and have 230 people on the bench and jacksonville is a pretty big town, well thats a bummer so if any members are union looking for work you can scratch jacksoville off the list

There's gonna be more of that.
There are minimum financial solvency requirements that are set by the International. If those requirements are not met, the International can come in, shut down the local and then force a merge.

Locals are signatory to the international agreement sunrise to sunset. The national agreement can be pulled anytime they wish. We took on a nearby citys local after they began to struggle a few years ago. Lots of guys on the bench everywhere right now.

Does anyone know, on a economic downturn, if the union shops (and tech employment) have the same decline in sales/work as the non-union shops?

The shop that I work for is still doing new construction installs, and we are in one of the worst housing markets in the country. I dont know why they are still building, I am the only person that lives on my street. Everyone walked away from thier home.
Oh, shop is non-union.

Talking to my union neighbor who run big equipment for building big buildings and his company use to be about 1000 employees about two years ago, according to him. They are down to 100 or so employees and he is lucky to get in 3 days of week of work now.
I'll be glad when the good old days come back where you guys feel safe enough in your jobs because the economy is strong that you can call me a scap again.
Oh, the good olde days! Who would have thought. And yes, around here the open market and union market are taking a beating from what I see.

the current economics have changed the landscape for most areas, whether open shop or union. for the plan and spec guys, that market is waaay off for 2009, but is slowly picking up steam. there are projects all over that are bidding, but are waiting to be awarded due to lack of funding, or slow funding. the design build and service portion of the business is up in most cases, especially for those who do that type of work as a rule, not out of necessity. we are a union shop, and 2009 was an up year for us to the tune of over thirty percent. 2010 is continuing that trend. i do zero plan and spec, except start up for several manufacturers. i do mostly design build and service contracts, with most of our work being boilers, chillers, and air handlers.
