I'm looking for some insight on an old debate I've always used H - L returns and convinced myself that in the winter upon a call for heat the cooler air will be pulled off the floor and the wormer air circulated down.In the summer warmer air pulled from the top and the cooler air just say fall to the floor. This always made sense to me and I feel is the correct way to do the job.Q-Due to how the air circulates when the fan comes on you condition the entire space anyway do you think you loose efficiance if you just use a low return. I just wanted some other opinions because I never used low ret. only and A new builder I'm giveing an est. to wanted low returnes.:argue:

Doesnt Matter! You could put the return in the ceiling, floor, wall high or low, as long as the supplies are mixing the air up in the room. Returns have very little pressure. Light a match 5' away from a return wont do a thing, hold it 5' from a supply and it will blow it out. Think of it as a water sprinkler, you spray the water all over it settles down and finds its way back to the drain. Supply registers=sprinkler, returns=drain. You do need to give each room or area a drain so it doesnt overflow, in airflow this would be a pressure difference.
