I just got a place at N. Myrtle Beach, SC. It has window units for HVAC. Would a split duct unit be a good move for both heat and ac there? I have heard that there are limitations related to these units when the temp. drops and their ability to generate heat. Is this correct? Is there a temp range where they stop producing heat? Should I stay away from something like this?

The tech people at various mfg's suggest that their unit will work for my application, but they need the sale.

Would a higher seer unit be best for the cost with the tax credit?

They look slick and would be so much better than the window unit. Please respond and let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Dan

For your area a Heat pump will work. Heat pumps are very relaible for mild weather. Capacity start droping when the outside temperature drops at that point it uses a auxiliary heater or electric heater. That is when it becomes more expensive to operate. New Heat Pumps are a lot better.

Some times the tax credits pay for the upgrade and if it does not pay for it at least the upgrade is not expensive at all. That is definally a good reason to upgrade. You will get your money back in saving and comfort. (Humidity control and temperature control)
I do not recall right now the SEER, EER and HSPF for the heat pump tax credit but you have to meet the numbers in order to get it 30% of the total cost with a cap of $1500.

Good look, I hope this is helpful for you

One of the Pro's on this board is Kevin O'Neill and is located there in Myrtle Beach (maybe even in North Myrtle). Do a search under he is name and find his email address in his profile. He is a top notch guy - you can trust his recommendations.
