Decided to crank up AC to make sure it was OK. Um, no....the temp is actually rising according to me and the T-stat.
Everything on the T-stat is clearly set for cooling and I drilled down the temp to force it to come on. I've done this on 3 separate occasions and the same thing has happened.
This is an Amana ASZ-18 VS Heat pump. It cooled fine last summer and warmed fine this past winter so I'm at a loss at why the heat is coming on when its set for A/C
Me thinks it might be a T-stat problem, but I'll bow to you guy's opines-which many times before have been dead on.
BTW, the compressor is kicking in, after making several hissing and clunking sounds
My installer is coming over mid-week for its first tuneup (installed Jan 09) and I'll give him a full report but any ideas for right now?

Hard to say without looking at it. Without getting too technical, it almost sounds like a reversing valve not switching to cooling, especially if the heat was ok when you last used it.

Your reversing valve is not reversing for some reason. Could be electrical or mechanical fault. Your installer will know for sure.

Amana/Goodman have had trouble with their reversing valves recently. have your tech check model & serial #;s to see if your unit has defective valve, if so, part & labor should be covered under warranty.

and one else who chimes. Wondering out loud if I kick on the heat, the AC will come on....hmmmmm

Probably not. The reversing valve is usually defaulted to heat, which means it has to be energized by a cooling call to reverse it for cooling. My guess is you'll still have heat via the heat pump but no a/c.

Heat heats great, no A/C

Well, if you're lucky, and it is the reversing valve, the parts & labor might be covered like Pete3 said.

Its the stat.....Its always the stat. :deadhorse:
I would have to venture with the others and agree that most likely your looking at a reversing valve issue more than anything.

Lucky Goodman/amana puts out a good warranty like Hyundai and Kia

Amana is good equipment; most equipment will have some failures, many due to improper installation work.
It could be something simple, such as bad control-circuitry connections, etc.
Never let them change out a reversing valve until all other possible causes for it not reversing are eliminated!
Too many major parts are condemned & changed out when the cause for those failures were elsewhere! - Darrell
