Another CC6400 Question

Under the configuration menu of the 6400, there is a folder or section where you add the software channels. WHat exactly goes here? Can someone give me a specific application and maybe an example?
I have programmed (4) 6400's so far but havent used this section (I'm very green but learning something new every day) because I dont know what goes here.

Softeware points can be used to:

Display values that are calculated in a B++ program, or these values as an input to a standard algorithm.
Make the output of a standard algorithm, the input to another algorithm
Allow you to write point data across controllers.
